A 3 Step Skincare Routine That Actually Works

When you are time-poor as most mums out there are, your well-researched and let’s be honest crazy-expensive 9 step skincare routine is inevitably going to go down the drain. Hell, most nights I barely manage to put on my moisturiser, brush my teeth, and collapse into bed. The worst thing is, our sleep or skin are not what they used to be, and not having any routine at all will long-term be damaging to our skin. So how do we combat this and do we really need a complicated skincare routine in order to have good skin? Let’s jump in and explore a 3 step skincare routine that actually works.

What are the 3 skincare products you actually really need?

According to leading dermatologists, a good cleanser, moisturiser, and SPF will take you a long way. Hm, is that really it!? Well according to Dr. Temitayo Ogunleye, M.D., assistant professor of clinical dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine you should really be washing with a cleanser and then follow it with moisturizer and sunscreen (or combine the two with a moisturizer that has broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher) in the morning. And at night, wash with the cleanser again and apply moisturizer. Yes, you can use your SPF moisturizer at night if you’d like, Dr. Ogunleye says. You might find that you prefer something thicker at night, but there’s no rule against using the one with SPF before bed, she says. She also advises against using too many products as stripped-down skincare routine is not only simply enough but also reduces risk of skin irritation or allergies. She also advises to stick to the simplified routine for a few weeks before changing anything as it takes our skin this long to get used to the new products.

Which key ingredients should I be looking for?

Again no surprises here, your products should contain glycolic acid, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. Glycolic acid is a water-soluble alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that is derived from sugar cane. It is one of the most well-known and widely used alpha-hydroxy acids in the skincare industry, predominantly an important ingredient in our cleansers. The basic work this acid does is to peel off dead skin cells and leave are skin feeling and looking smoother and fresher.

Vitamin C- this is an ingredient that literally exploded all over the skincare industry in the last few years. And for all the right reasons. Not only does it have anti-aging properties but in some cases has been found to heal damaged skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A real win-win here if you ask us.

Hyaluronic Acid- this is a really interesting one. Hyaluronic acid is actually mostly present in our skin. However, due to sun exposure, smoking, and pollution, as time goes the natural levels of it simply reduce. The use of this acid in our skincare products does, however, promote moisturised looking skin and will similarly to vitamin C naturally help fight aging.

So what is the verdict?

Keep it simple but efficient. Find a 3 step skincare routine that suits your skin best and stick to these hard-working ingredients. Also, ensure that the skincare is right for your skin type-, for oily skin stick to the light formula and make sure you have a good cleanser on hand. And for dry skin, we recommend an oil-based cleanser followed by a thick and luscious moisturiser.

Below is our top pick of products for dry, normal and combination, and oily skin that will make you feel pampered every night without eating into the precious sleep time.
